I hope everyone had a chance to wear green on Saint Patrick’s Day, or else it
would have been one long day of being pinched (especially the students!) There
are so many creative ways to decorate a classroom and have activities that
truly reflect the meaning of the day. Of course there are the commonly known
leprechauns along with the pot of gold, but how about the true meaning of the
shamrocks and the meaning of the celebration? It is important to celebrate
Saint Patrick’s Day with the American tradition, but we must also take some
time to explain to the children what the meaning behind it all is. In order to
help the classroom get a bit of Saint Patrick’s Day love here are some ideas, these
work best for a religious school but can also be created for public classrooms
as well.

These
can help to decorate and help the younger students learn the colors of a
rainbow. It can be personal to each class because of the personal pictures or with
their hands dipped in different colors of paint. It could be a fun and messy
art activity!
To
help children understand what the day is all about it is helpful to read to
them a short story or a passage that explains the significance of Saint Patrick
and why he was important. Then to let children have some fun while giving them
an educational lesson, using one of these activities would work just fine.
Having
the class learn about Saint Patrick’s Day can not only be taught in the
classroom but parents can help as well! Getting parents involved with this activity
can be a fun and exciting way to learn more about children and their family
dynamic.
